Measurements of lipid peroxidation and α-tocopherol destruction in vitro and in vivo and their significance in connexion with the biological function of vitamin E

چکیده
I. Lipid peroxides have been measured by a micro-iodimetric method in pancreas, lung, adrenal, leg muscle, spleen, brain, small intestine and uterus of vitamin E-deficient and vitamin E-supplemented rats. There were no differences due to the vitamin E status of the rats. 2. The decay of [14C]~-a-tocopherol in peroxidizing methyl oleate, maize oil methyl esters and cod-liver oil methyl esters was studied at goo. When the decrease in tocopherol was plotted against increase in peroxide value for each ester preparation, it was found that, the greater the degree of unsaturation of the substrate, the less was the amount of tocopherol destroyed at any peroxide value attained before the end of the induction period. When the decay of tocopherol was plotted against time, however, the greater the degree of unsaturation of the substrate, the greater was the amount of tocopherol destroyed at any given time before the end of the induction period. 3. The significance of these results in connexion with the biological function of vitamin E is discussed.

Increasing vitamin E content of canola (Brassica napus L.) by transferring γ-tmt gene
Vitamin E is one of the lipid soluble vitamins consisting of several isoforms, including tocopherols and tocotrienols amongst which the alpha tocopherol is the most active one. The conversion of γ tocophrol to α tocopherol takes place by the activity of γ-tmt enzyme. Many plants including canola lack the γ-tmt gene to enable them to convert γ tocophrol into α tocopherol. The aim of this study w...

Objective: The role of herbs against the free radicals have been put forth recently in combating many diseases. The aim of this study was to elucidate the in vitro capacity and in vivo antioxidant properties of sedimental extract of Tinospora cordifolia (SETc). Materials and Methods: SETcwas subjected to in vitro chemical analysis such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide, hydr...
متن کاملRestorative Effect of Vitamin E Supplementation on Hepatic Lipid Peroxidation and Lipid Profile Changes Induced by Sublethal γ-Radiation in BALB/c Mice
In order to find a prophylactic supplementation for individuals who are at risk of exposure to ionizing radiation, we attempted to evaluate the effect of Vitamin E (Vit-E), a biological free radical scavenger, on restoration of hepatic lipid peroxidation (LPO) and lipid profile (LP) changes induced by sublethal g- radiation in BALB/c mice. The concentrations of cholesterol and phospholipid were...
متن کاملSynergistic Protection of L-Arginine and Vitamin E On Lipid Peroxidation of Asthenospermic Patients
Background Lipid peroxidation is known to cause various impairments to sperm cells and may play a major role in the etiology of male infertility. Asthenospermia is the main factor of male infertility and has significantly higher level of peroxidation than in normozoospermic males. MaterialsAndMethods Using thiobarbituric acid (TBA) assay procedure, we have determined the level of lipid peroxida...
